Roughly 30 years later, all of the French colonies, started to decolonize. Citizens of these colonies rebelled and usually started a war or a rebellion to become independent. The French conquered the Congo in about 1880. In the next thirty years, France had used a considerable amount of the French Congo’s natural resources and created a system of forced labor which eventually was one of the main reasons for the rebellion and decolonization of the Congo. Thirty years after the French had colonized Gabon, several treaties were signed with African rulers about Christian missions and the French founded Libreville in Gabon for freed slaves. Soon after that, the gabonese rebelled for independence. The French joined Chad to Equatorial Africa about twenty to thirty years after they had occupied it. Several decades later, Chad got it’s independence and not long after that, civil war erupted. In Obnagui-Chari, thirty years after the French had colonized there, World War 2 happened and many citizens supported the Free French Forces. They were given their own territorial assembly and representation in the French parliament. Ten years later, Central African Republic got it’s independence. Approximately forty years after the French had split Cameroon with the British, Cameroon demanded independence.
What were the positive and negative effects of the colonization for the country that colonized the new land?
Some of the negative effects include how the French wanted so much land, so they didn’t think to develop one piece of land really well. Also spreading their territory out made it easier to be attacked by neighboring countries. The positive effects were that France would get a lot of profit from expanding into Africa because at that time, the economy was booming. There was a lot of trade going on of natural resources and slaves. The French saw this as an opportunity to make a lot of revenue for their country.
What were the positive and negative effects of colonization upon the native people and land?
For the natives, colonization wasn’t something they initially wanted. The French however did treat them fairly in most cases. In some cases they treated them badly like when they used forced labor to help gather natural goods for trading. Having your land colonized by an outside country does have some positive side effects however. For example, the native people get to become citizens of France, they get to live in an organized fashion where things are under control and there is more fairness throughout the colony.
